Description

Nothing2Hide is a nongovernmental organization specialized in digital security that puts technology at the service of protecting and disseminating information in order to strengthen democracies around the world. Since it was founded, the organization has trained nearly 4700 journalists, activists, campaigners and citizens in data and communications security across 20 countries. It describes its identity around four traits: technology, pedagogy, fieldwork and sharing.

On technology, it offers long-term technical support instead of outsourcing it, unlike many media-support organizations. On pedagogy, it draws on experience training students at journalism schools and professionals at outlets such as Radio France and France Télévisions. On fieldwork, it draws on missions with journalists facing censorship or surveillance in countries including Turkey and Syria.

On sharing, it releases its tools, teaching materials and software under a free license, so anyone can reuse them. Nothing2Hide is a member of the Global Investigative Journalism Network, a founding member of the Maison des lanceurs d’alerte, and a member of the Civicert network. The organization also offers emergency digital assistance and has published guides and resources.

It was cofounded in 2017 by Grégoire Pouget, previously head of the “New Media” desk at Reporters Without Borders, and Jean-Marc Bourguignon, a hacker and hacktivist linked to the Telecomix movement, both of whom deliver digital security training in France and abroad, including in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Senegal, Tunisia, Ukraine and Turkey. Journalist Clémentine Billé, who trained in digital security while investigating and joined the organization at its founding, also serves as a trainer and leads projects on media literacy and countering cyberharassment.
