Divergente

Description

Divergente is a Portuguese non-profit digital magazine of narrative and investigative journalism, based in Lisbon and founded in 2014. It covers public-interest topics that mainstream media underrepresent. It gives voice to people who are rarely heard, favouring depth and accuracy over speed.

A multidisciplinary team of journalists, designers, programmers, illustrators and data analysts works on reportages, podcasts, documentaries and webdocumentaries.

The outlet is registered with Portugal’s media regulator, ERC. It is owned by Bagabaga Studios, a multimedia creation cooperative that publishes its annual financial reports. Divergente accepts no advertising. It is funded by reader contributions, journalism grants and philanthropic institutions. It refuses any support that would compromise its editorial independence.

Each major investigation is accompanied by a page. It explains how the story originated, who worked on it, the methodology used and how it was financed. Its editorial statute commits the outlet to independence, rigour, pluralism, transparency and creativity. It rejects discrimination on any ground.

Since publishing its first report in 2015, Divergente has received more than twenty national and international awards for its investigative reporting, documentary film and data-journalism work, covering subjects such as environment, migration, elections and social rights.
