IRPI, the Investigative Reporting Project Italy, describes itself as the first non-profit investigative journalism centre founded in Italy. It was registered in 2012 as an Associazione di Promozione Sociale. For more than a decade it has produced transnational investigative reporting of public interest, at first published through Italian and international outlets and, since 2020, on its own online magazine, IrpiMedia.

Its journalists cover organized crime, corruption, financial crime, migration, environment, state surveillance and gender-based violence. They often work through long-term, resource-intensive investigations that mainstream media struggle to sustain.

IRPI is a member of the Global Investigative Journalism Network and of the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project. IrpiMedia belongs to Reference, a European network of independent outlets that promotes public-interest journalism before national and European institutions.

As a non-profit, IRPI distributes no profit. Any budget surplus is reinvested in new projects. The organisation is funded mainly by individual and foundation donations and by grants, with annual financial transparency reports published for donors and readers.

It runs IrpiLeaks, a platform for anonymous source submissions. The editorial team includes co-directors, a centre director, journalists, an administrator, an impact manager, fundraisers and legal consultants. It is supported by a large network of external collaborators and partner organisations across Italy and abroad, and its investigations have won numerous international journalism awards.
