Committee to Protect Journalists

Description

The Committee to Protect Journalists is an independent, nonprofit organization that promotes press freedom worldwide. It defends journalists’ right to report the news safely, without fear of reprisal. It is headquartered in New York City and made up of experts around the world. When press freedom violations occur, it mobilizes a network of researchers who report and take action on behalf of those targeted.

CPJ documents attacks on the press in repressive countries, conflict zones and established democracies alike, tracking journalists killed, imprisoned or missing. A board of prominent journalists from around the world helps guide its activities. Its work rests on research that provides a global snapshot of obstructions to a free press worldwide.

CPJ denounces press freedom violations, meets with heads of state and high-ranking officials, and leads or advises on diplomatic efforts. It works with other organizations to help ensure justice when journalists are imprisoned or killed. It also provides safety and security information and rapid response assistance to journalists and media support staff working around the world.

CPJ has been active for 40 years. It is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in New York City, funded through donations. It communicates its work through news alerts, special reports, letters and an annual press freedom awards program.
