ClientEarth
Description
ClientEarth is an environmental law charity that uses the law to protect the planet and its inhabitants.
Its team of lawyers and policy experts tackles the most pressing environmental challenges, working to hold governments and companies to account over climate change, nature loss and pollution. It was founded in 2008 in London by James Thornton. The organisation has since grown into a global operation with branches, representative offices and subsidiaries across North America, Asia and the Pacific, and Europe, including offices in Brussels, Warsaw, Berlin, Beijing, Madrid and Tokyo.
It brings legal interventions and court challenges on issues such as air pollution, coal-fired power, marine protection, corporate reporting on climate risk, and transparency in EU decision-making. It has also worked to expand legal rights for citizens and NGOs to bring environmental cases to court. A Global Board of Trustees and Global Leadership Group set the strategic direction of the organisation worldwide.
ClientEarth acts through litigation and legal advocacy rather than by taking on cases for members of the public. It works with partner organisations, strategic allies and local groups to pursue systemic change through the courts and policy engagement.
