The Greening of Detroit
Description
The Greening of Detroit is a nonprofit environmental organization that works to restore Detroit’s tree canopy and green spaces. It was founded in 1989, after decades of tree loss to Dutch elm disease, urban expansion and neglect. It serves Detroit, Highland Park and Hamtramck, Michigan.
The organization plants trees on public and community land, working with block clubs, schools and volunteers to plan and carry out plantings. It runs workforce training programs, including the Detroit Conservation Corps and Green Corps, that give residents and young people skills and paid experience in the green sector. It also builds and maintains gardens and green spaces such as Lafayette Greens and runs education programs like TreeKeepers Kids for schoolchildren.
It manages the Walter I. Meyers Nursery, a tree nursery in Rouge Park that supplies trees for city reforestation. Its work combines environmental restoration with community engagement, job training and education, funded by donors, foundations and corporate partners.
