Tree Aid

Description

Tree Aid is a development organization that works with communities in Africa’s drylands to grow trees and tackle poverty and climate change.

It helps people plant trees at scale and restore land, so communities can grow food, earn incomes and rebuild ecosystems. Its work covers forest governance, natural resource management, food security and nutrition, and enterprise development. Programmes currently run in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali and Niger.

Tree Aid trains local farmers in land, water and forest management, supports village enterprise groups that process and sell tree products such as shea butter, and works with local authorities to agree rules for managing forests. It partners with governments, other NGOs and international agencies on these projects. Its work contributes to the wider Great Green Wall initiative across the Sahel.

The organization was founded in 1987 by foresters responding to the famine in Ethiopia, aiming to build long-term resilience rather than short-term relief. It is registered as a charity in the United Kingdom, with an office in Bristol as well as offices in Burkina Faso, Mali, Ethiopia and Ghana.
