Blue Marine Foundation

Description

Blue Marine Foundation is a marine conservation charity that works to restore ocean health by tackling overfishing.

It was set up as a legacy project of the 2009 documentary The End of the Line, founded by the film’s producer and its author together with a filmmaker. It has helped establish and support marine reserves and protected areas, including in Lyme Bay, the Turneffe Atoll in Belize, the Chagos Archipelago and across the UK Overseas Territories through the Blue Belt Programme. It works with fishing communities, governments, scientists and other NGOs to design protections that let fishing continue alongside conservation.

Its work spans sustainable fisheries, restoration projects, marine protection and ocean carbon research, including a global survey of carbon stored in seabed sediments. It has also pursued legal action against the UK government over overfishing in UK waters. Blue Marine operates from offices in London, Edinburgh and Brussels.
