Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team
Description
Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team is a membership organization that identifies and protects vernal ponds around Cape Ann, Massachusetts.
It documents vernal ponds and works to have them officially certified with the state’s Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program, since certification is what gives the ponds protection from development. The team has identified and certified more than 300 vernal pools on Cape Ann. It also educates the public about the reptiles and amphibians that depend on these ponds, running snake exhibits and presentations in schools, libraries and other public places, and leading nighttime field trips to vernal ponds.
The organization was established in 1990 and became a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2006. It is a membership organization that depends on volunteers and welcomes people to join, attend field trips, make donations and take part in fundraising events. It believes that once people learn about vernal pools, they will want to help protect them.
