Bicycology

Description

Bicycology is a UK-based cyclists’ collective that promotes cycling to encourage environmental and social responsibility.

It was formed after the 2005 London to Scotland G8 Bike Ride. The group is non-hierarchical and run directly by its members, without a formal leadership structure. It is funded by donations, fees and occasional grants.

The collective offers free activities such as bike maintenance sessions, cycling workshops, film screenings, presentations and talks for schools and communities. It builds pedal-powered and solar-powered equipment, including an energy trailer used for sound systems and outdoor cinema. Through education, entertainment and creative direct action it promotes cycling as a healthy, low-carbon alternative and links this to wider issues of environmental destruction and social injustice.

Bicycology has organised long-distance bicycle tours combining travel with public events, including tours from London to Lancaster, from Aylesbury to Exeter, and a week-long cycling and sustainability festival in Lancaster and Morecambe. It has also staged public actions such as reclaiming car park spaces to promote cycling over driving. The group has received funding from Artists Project Earth and belongs to the World Carfree Network.
