Press Freedom Organizations Belgium

Description

Apache is an independent Belgian news outlet based in Flanders. It practices investigative journalism and holds power holders accountable, aiming to give a voice to people who otherwise are not heard. It is published by De Werktitel, a recognized cooperative company founded in 2009. Apache produces both a website and Apache Magazine.

Apache runs advertising-free, funding itself through members and cooperators so that its journalists are not under commercial pressure from advertisers. It has also received financial support from the European Union, the European Journalism Centre, the Fred Foundation, Journalismfund Europe, the Limelight Foundation, LimeNet, Stichting Veronica and the Flemish government.

The outlet is part of a network of domestic and foreign investigative news media with which it shares and co-produces stories. It is also a member of the Reference network.

Apache has received several journalism awards. These include the European Press Prize 2022, for its cross-border investigation into international property investors buying up rental housing in European capitals, the Prijs voor de Democratie in 2022, and Het Vliegwiel in 2023 from the Flemish-Dutch association of investigative journalists.
