Description

350.org is an international environmental organization that campaigns against the climate crisis. It builds a global, grassroots movement of ordinary people to end the use of fossil fuels and speed the shift to renewable energy. The name refers to 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide, the level scientists have identified as a safe upper limit for the atmosphere. It was founded in 2007 by American environmentalist Bill McKibben together with students from Middlebury College.

The organization works through online campaigns, grassroots organizing and mass public actions, coordinated with a worldwide network of local groups and partner organizations. Its best known campaign pushed institutions to divest from fossil fuel companies, a movement that has led trillions of dollars away from the industry. It also campaigned against pipeline projects such as Keystone XL and helped organize large mobilizations including the 2019 Global Climate Strike. Each year it runs hundreds of campaigns and trains thousands of activists.

350.org operates internationally, with affiliated groups and regional teams across the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Pacific. It works with students, unions, faith groups, Indigenous communities and other partners to build broad coalitions for climate action. The organization is registered as a nonprofit in the United States.
