Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, known as ZLHR, is a non-profit human rights organization in Zimbabwe. It works to protect and promote human rights through litigation, education and advocacy. It seeks to protect and broaden the human rights provisions in Zimbabwe’s constitution.

ZLHR works to uphold the rule of law, the unimpeded administration of justice, and free and fair elections. It defends the free flow of information and the protection of constitutional rights and freedoms. It works alongside other Zimbabwean and regional human rights groups, especially in Southern Africa and within the legal profession.

The organization runs litigation, research and advocacy programmes, mobile legal clinics, and training and public education events. It publishes annual reports, policy briefs and fact sheets on human rights in Zimbabwe. It has offices in Harare, Matabeleland, Manicaland and Masvingo.

ZLHR has received international recognition for its work. The United States gave it the first Freedom Defenders Award in 2007. Canada’s International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development gave it the John Humphrey Freedom Award in 2008.
