Xnet

Description

Xnet is a network of specialists and activists based in Barcelona and online. It has worked since 2008 for a free internet and real democracy.

It proposes advanced solutions in fields tied to digital rights and the modernization of democracy in the twenty-first century. These include privacy, data use, artificial intelligence and net neutrality; freedom of expression and information against fake news, propaganda and disinformation; defence of whistleblowers, informers and citizen leaks and the fight against corruption; technopolitics and citizen advocacy, political research and development methods, transparency and participation; free culture; and broader struggles for civil liberties.

Xnet describes itself as a platform of affinity based on mutual trust, without hierarchy or formal decision-making processes. It is supported by a wide network of advisers and social-media followers.

Among its achievements, Xnet lists the conviction of 65 politicians and bankers, 15 of them jailed, including Spain’s former economy minister and a former head of the International Monetary Fund, in the Bankia black-card case, and a fine of more than a million euros against the Chamber of Commerce for misuse of data belonging to millions of self-employed workers.

Other achievements include DD, a digital-sovereignty software suite for schools, a proposed legal template against disinformation that preserves freedom of expression, and the first anonymous, secure institutional mailbox for whistleblowers reporting abuse and corruption. Xnet also runs a postgraduate course on technopolitics and digital-era rights, and is legally hosted by IDCDE.
