Whistleblower Organizations Indonesia

Description

IndonesiaLeaks is an independent platform that lets members of the public submit information of public interest to trusted news outlets in Indonesia.

Sources can upload documents anonymously, and the platform strips metadata and other digital traces before encrypting everything that is sent. Visitors are advised to use the Tor browser for extra protection, and the system is built so that no one receiving a document can identify who sent it.

Submitted material is checked by journalists at the member media of IndonesiaLeaks, following investigative journalism standards, before any story is published. The member outlets then collaborate on the reporting, which is meant to widen the reach and impact of a story and to expose wrongdoing such as corruption. The Legal Aid Institute for the Press takes part in the initiative to help protect informants throughout the process, including after a story is published.

IndonesiaLeaks points to the country’s press law as guaranteeing journalists the right to protect their sources. It presents itself as a way to support press freedom and transparency by giving whistleblowers a safe channel to reach the media.
