Description

The Whippany River Watershed Action Committee is a member-based nonprofit that works to preserve and protect the land and water of the Whippany River Watershed in Morris County, New Jersey.

Its members are twelve municipalities plus Morris County, working with volunteers, civic groups and state agencies. The committee organizes river clean-ups, wildlife management workshops, lake shore and riverbank plantings, and storm water retention projects. It also monitors water quality, designs model ordinances for storm water and headwaters protection, and runs educational and outreach programs.

The watershed supplies drinking water to more than a million people, so the committee treats pollution control and habitat restoration as core work. It was established in 1999, evolving out of an earlier Mayors Action Committee. Its work has been recognized with awards from the US Environmental Protection Agency and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
