Environmental Organizations Belgium

Description

WePlanet is a network of grassroots citizens organisations working on science-based solutions to the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.

It began in 2021 when a small group of scientists and environmentalists met in Antwerp to build a new environmental movement centred on progress, urgency and optimism. It has since grown into an alliance with chapters across many countries on four continents, from Uganda to Finland. The alliance was first known as RePlanet before taking the name WePlanet.

The organisation follows an ecomodernist approach, favouring evidence-based and pragmatic answers to environmental problems and embracing the benefits of technology. It supports nuclear power, genetically modified organisms and cultivated meat, and campaigns to keep existing nuclear plants running. It has pushed for nuclear power to count within the EU green taxonomy, for funding for precision fermentation, and for gene-editing legislation in the European Parliament. Its Reboot Food campaign promotes new food technologies as a way to free up land for rewilding, and its African chapters work to reduce charcoal use because of its impact on deforestation and indoor air pollution.

Its mission is to rewild large areas of the planet and restore the climate while using modern technology to lift people out of poverty. The organisation says it takes no funding from industry and relies instead on grants from philanthropic foundations and small donations from supporters. Its core values are described as science, equity, optimism, bravery and engagement.
