Environmental Organizations United States

Description

The Union of Concerned Scientists is a national nonprofit science advocacy organization in the United States.

It was founded in 1969 by faculty and students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It puts independent, rigorous science into action to develop solutions for pressing problems. Its staff includes scientists, analysts, policy experts, organizers and communicators.

The organization works on climate change, clean energy, sustainable food and transport, and reducing the threat of nuclear weapons. It also pushes for racial and economic equity in its solutions, and challenges corporations and special interests that mislead the public about science. It does this through independent research and analysis, public exposure of bad science, and advocacy aimed at the media, the public and elected officials at the national, state and local level.

It mobilizes a network of scientist supporters and works together with more than a thousand local and national partner organizations. It is funded only by individuals and independent foundations and does not accept corporate or government grants, to protect its independence. It operates from offices across the United States.
