Description

TreePeople is an environmental organization that inspires, engages and supports people to take personal responsibility for the environment by planting and caring for trees.

It works in the Greater Los Angeles area on community forestry, urban tree planting and tree distribution, restoration and conservation of wildlands, school greening, and education and outdoor equity programs for students. It also runs a land trust that stewards more than 3,000 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains, and works on water programs that promote urban watershed management, stormwater capture and water conservation. Its policy and advocacy work pushes science-based policies and nature-based solutions, backed by a research department producing reports on water security, soil, drought resilience and urban heat.

TreePeople was founded in Los Angeles in 1973 by then-teenager Andy Lipkis, who began planting trees to counter smog damage to forests in the San Bernardino Mountains. It is headquartered at Coldwater Canyon Park, a 45-acre site on Mulholland Drive in the Santa Monica Mountains, which also houses its Native Plant Nursery. Since its founding it has helped plant more than two million trees in the Los Angeles area and has engaged more than 3 million people in environmental action.
