Description

Transparency International Ireland is the Irish chapter of the worldwide movement against corruption. Corruption is defined as the abuse of entrusted power for private gain. It was founded in 2004, part of the global Transparency International network of over a hundred chapters and affiliates, based around a secretariat in Berlin.

Its mission is to empower people with the support they need to promote integrity and stop corruption in all its forms. It works toward an Ireland that is open and fair, where entrusted power serves the public interest. Since May 2011 the organization has run a Speak Up helpline for anyone facing an ethical dilemma or considering reporting wrongdoing at work. Interpretation and translation are available in languages including Arabic, Polish, Romanian, Brazilian Portuguese, Lithuanian, Bulgarian, Russian and Mandarin Chinese.

It operates the Transparency Legal Advice Centre, Ireland’s only independent law centre giving free legal advice to whistleblowers. The centre has supported 74 whistleblowers to date. The organization is independent of government, politically non-partisan and not profit-making. It does not accept donations that could compromise its independence, and does not seek discretionary funding from government, business or trade unions, though it does receive funding for individual projects and services such as training.

It bases its policy positions on objective, professional analysis. It engages with government, business and civil society, and is a member of the Whistleblowing International Network. It is based in Dublin.
