The Sunrise Project
Description
The Sunrise Project is a global charity that builds social movements to speed up the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
It works by connecting people, communities and organisations so they can act together, sometimes leading a campaign and sometimes supporting others, focused on aligning action where decisions get made. It began in Australia during a fossil fuel expansion boom, working to connect and strengthen community opposition to coal and gas projects. Over time that work grew into a wider systems approach covering finance, accountability and support for communities through the energy transition.
The organisation is a hybrid campaigning and funding group. It raises money from donors and re-grants a large share of its revenue to other non-government organisations and community groups working toward the same goals. It comprises separately incorporated entities, including one in Australia and one in the United States, each an independent legal body sharing a common mission.
Its current program in Australia focuses on shifting the country from a laggard to a leader on climate action, and moving global finance out of fossil fuels.
