Environmental Organizations United States

Description

Surfrider Foundation is a nonprofit environmental organization that works to protect oceans, waves and beaches.

It is a community of volunteers organized into local chapters, backed by a national network of science, environmental and legal experts. It runs advocacy campaigns, community science and cleanup programs, and works with local and national authorities on coastal protection issues. It has taken legal action, including a case over public beach access that reached the United States Supreme Court, and campaigns against development that threatens coastlines. It also runs a membership program and volunteer network to mobilize supporters on coastal issues.

The organization was founded in 1984 in Malibu, California, by a group of surfers responding to threats to their local surf break. Its first local chapters were established in 1991, and it has since grown into a nationwide network across the United States. It is headquartered in San Clemente, California.
