Save the Redwoods League

Description

Save the Redwoods League is a nonprofit organization that works to revitalize coast redwood and giant sequoia forests across California’s redwood range.

It buys land and development rights to protect notable redwood groves, and helps create and expand public parks and reserves, often donating acquired land to California State Parks or the National Park Service. It has protected more than 220,000 acres of redwood forest, restored 37,000 acres, and helped create or expand 76 redwood parks. It also supports restoration, scientific research, education and small grants to other conservation organizations.

Its work is guided by a science-based conservation strategy, the Vibrant Forests Plan, and by a periodic State of the Redwoods Conservation Report that tracks threats such as unprotected forest, human encroachment and fire risk. It funds research on redwood ecosystems, threatened species and climate change, and uses tools such as LiDAR to measure trees and guide restoration. Its education programs bring K-12 students and teachers into redwood forests to study science and conservation.

The League was founded in 1918 by conservationists who traveled to northern California to investigate logging of old-growth redwoods. It relies on donations from individuals along with funding from foundations, corporations and government agencies.
