Save the Elephants

Description

Save the Elephants is a research and conservation organization dedicated to securing a future for elephants.

It was founded in 1993 by zoologist Iain Douglas-Hamilton. It is a registered charity headquartered in Nairobi, with its principal research station in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and another in Tsavo.

The organization studies elephant behaviour and populations, using radio and GPS tracking to follow their movements and protect herds from poachers. Its long-term data on almost 1,000 individuals in Samburu informs landscape planning and helps measure the impact of ivory poaching across Africa. It also develops low-tech tools, such as beehive fences, that reduce conflict between elephants and farming communities, and it runs education and outreach programmes for local communities.

In 2013 it launched the Elephant Crisis Fund with the Wildlife Conservation Network, which has funded partner organizations working to stop elephant poaching, ivory trafficking and demand for ivory across Africa and Asia.
