Save the Bay

Description

Save The Bay is an organization that protects and restores San Francisco Bay for people and wildlife.

It works through three strategies: advocacy, restoration and connection. It pushes for policies, investments and decisions that protect the Bay and prepare the region for climate change, restores wetlands with partners and volunteers, and runs hands-on learning, volunteering and community programs to connect people with the Bay. Its work is grounded in science and shaped by community input.

The organization was founded in 1961 by three citizen activists, Sylvia McLaughlin, Kay Kerr and Esther Gulick, originally as a lobby group opposing Bay fill and pollution. Its early advocacy helped lead to the creation of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission, a model later used for other government commissions. It has also supported plastic bag bans in the region, including in San Francisco and San Jose.

It operates in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, and has led restoration and climate adaptation efforts for more than 60 years.
