Royal River Conservation Trust
Description
Royal River Conservation Trust is a land trust that conserves land in the Royal River watershed in southern Maine.
Its mission is to protect the natural, recreational, scenic, agricultural and historic resources of the Royal River region for current and future generations. It works with private landowners, municipalities, government bodies and other conservation groups. It acquires land through donation or purchase, uses conservation easements to conserve land without acquiring it, and assists partners with conservation projects, property access and education.
The trust manages more than seven miles of Royal River shoreline and twenty five miles of hiking trails. It covers the watershed’s communities of Auburn, Durham, Gray, New Gloucester, North Yarmouth, Pownal and Yarmouth. It has helped create or expand eighteen municipal and state parks, preserves and wildlife areas.
Its roots go back to 1988, when the North Yarmouth Land Trust and New Gloucester Preservation Trust were founded. In 2006 those two joined with the Yarmouth Land Trust and Friends of the Royal River to form the current organization, and the Pownal Land Trust joined in 2009. It is funded almost entirely by charitable gifts.
