Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy
Description
The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is a California state agency that acquires and preserves open space in the Santa Monica Mountains region.
It buys and manages land for wildlife and native plant habitat, and for public recreation. It works through public-private partnerships, land donations, time-leasing arrangements and acquisitions tied to development mitigation. It also awards grants to nonprofit organizations for educational and interpretation programs.
Established by the California State Legislature in 1980, the conservancy has helped preserve tens of thousands of acres of parkland and improved public recreational facilities. Its zone covers areas north and west of metropolitan Los Angeles, including the Santa Monica Mountains, Santa Susana Mountains, Simi Hills, San Gabriel Mountains, Verdugo Mountains, San Rafael Hills and Puente Hills.
