Sierra Nevada Conservancy
Description
The Sierra Nevada Conservancy is a California state agency that works to restore and protect the natural resources and communities of California’s Sierra-Cascade region.
It serves a 27-million-acre service area covering the Sierra Nevada range, the Mono Basin, Owens Valley, the Modoc Plateau, and parts of the southern Cascade Range and Klamath Mountains. It awards grants to government entities, nonprofit organizations and tribal organizations for economic, recreation and resource preservation projects, and it offers educational symposiums. It also works to protect the region from wildfire and a changing climate.
The conservancy was established by Assembly Bill 2600, the Laird-Leslie Sierra Nevada Conservancy Act, signed into law in 2004 and effective in 2005. It is one of ten state conservancies within the California Natural Resources Agency, governed by a board of voting and non-voting members.
