Environmental Organizations United States

Description

Riverkeeper is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to the protection of the Hudson River and its tributaries, and of the watersheds that supply New York City with drinking water.

It began as the Hudson River Fisherman’s Association in 1966, founded by scientists, fishermen and citizens concerned about pollution in the Hudson. In 1986 the association merged with the Hudson Riverkeeper Fund it had established in 1983 and took the name Riverkeeper. In 1999 Riverkeeper helped create the Waterkeeper Alliance, an umbrella organization uniting similar keeper groups.

Riverkeeper works through advocacy, citizen enforcement, litigation and water-quality monitoring. It has pursued lawsuits against polluters, opposed the Storm King power plant proposal and the Indian Point nuclear plant, campaigned for the removal of obsolete dams, and helped secure a 1997 agreement that committed New York City to protect its drinking-water supply. It also works on Superfund sites such as the Gowanus Canal and Newtown Creek, and has taken positions on energy projects affecting the Hudson.

The organization operates in the Hudson Valley and New York City region of the United States.
