Press Freedom Organizations Austria

Description

Reporter ohne Grenzen (RSF) Österreich is the Austrian section of Reporters sans Frontières, an internationally active, government-independent human rights organization. Reporters sans Frontières was founded in 1985 in Montpellier, France. It holds observer status at the Council of Europe, UNESCO and the United Nations. The Austrian section is a registered nonprofit association founded in 1998 and based in Vienna.

Its stated purpose is to promote human rights in line with the 1948 UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This means it focuses on freedom of the media and of opinion, the right to hold opinions without interference, and the right to seek, receive and impart information and ideas across borders regardless of frontiers. It also aims to support journalism that enables independent and thorough research.

The organization advocates for press freedom, media diversity, and the safety of reporters. It supports independent media work and fair legal proceedings for journalists.

It is run by a volunteer board, currently led by a president, a treasurer and a secretary. A secretary-general has managed day-to-day affairs since January 2025, supported by volunteers handling visual design, administration and fundraising. The organization is funded through memberships and donations.
