Rainforest Foundation Norway

Description

Rainforest Foundation Norway is a non-governmental organization that works to protect the world’s rainforests and the rights of Indigenous and forest peoples. It was founded in 1989 as the Norwegian branch of the Rainforest Foundation network started by Sting and Trudie Styler, and became an independent foundation in 1997. It is now one of the largest rainforest organizations in the world.

The organization collaborates with more than sixty local and national partner organizations across six rainforest countries in South America, Central Africa and Southeast Asia. It supports Indigenous and forest peoples in securing land rights, works to stop policies and business interests that destroy rainforests, and helps build policies and practices that protect forests and their inhabitants. It also carries out advocacy in international processes on rainforest issues.

It connects partners and civil society networks within and across countries, sharing knowledge and lessons learned so that proven solutions can grow to a larger scale. It has influenced major international funding flows by encouraging Norwegian authorities, UN agencies and international donors and investors to prioritize rainforest protection. It is a foundation with five Norwegian member organizations and operates independently from its sister organizations Rainforest Foundation US and Rainforest Foundation UK, which focus on different regions.
