Description

Prairie Rivers Network is Illinois’ advocate for clean water, healthy land and rivers, and abundant wildlife, based in Champaign, Illinois.

It began in 1967 as the Committee on Allerton Park, founded by Bruce and Patricia Hannon to stop a dam project that would have flooded Allerton Park along the Sangamon River; that effort succeeded. The group later became the Central States Education Center and took its current name in 1998. It is a registered nonprofit and the independent state affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation in Illinois.

The organization uses science, law and collective action to protect and restore rivers, return healthy soils and diverse wildlife to the land, and change how people care for the environment. It provides resources and assistance to individuals, groups and communities working to protect their local rivers and streams.

Its work focuses on pollution from industrial agriculture and factory farming, contamination from coal ash and coal mining, and partnerships with farmers and communities to restore soil and water health. It has pursued litigation, including a lawsuit, represented by Earthjustice, against Dynegy over Clean Water Act violations from coal ash at a former power station on the Vermilion River.
