Friends of the Earth Hong Kong

Friends of the Earth (HK) is a Hong Kong-based environmental organisation working to protect the environment through advocacy and public education.

It was registered as a charity in 1983 and is one of Hong Kong’s main environmental groups. Its mission is to encourage government, business and society to build sustainable and fair environmental policies, business practices and lifestyles, protecting Hong Kong and the surrounding region. It runs campaigns on public health, waste reduction, recycling, energy saving, tree conservation, water safety and climate change.

Over the years it has run programmes such as a clean-air campaign in the late 1980s, a beach clean-up day, a colour-coded recycling scheme in public housing estates, a wind-monitoring project, and an annual tree-planting challenge. It has also organised community campaigns, including one against the demolition of the Hunghom Peninsula housing estate, and youth volunteer exchanges along the Dongjiang river. It has a membership of more than 12,000 individuals and relies on public donations and volunteer work, receiving no regular government funding. It is not a member of Friends of the Earth International.
