Environmental Organizations Philippines

Description

Philippine Tarsier Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, in the Philippines, dedicated to conserving the Philippine tarsier. It was registered in 1996 by local Bohol residents and conservationists after a nature expert identified the need for a coordinated effort to halt the animal’s decline. It works with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Tourism, though it is a private-sector initiative.

The foundation runs a forest reservation and sanctuary in Corella, Bohol, covering several hectares within a larger protected forest. Its work spans habitat management and protection, community organization, ecological and biological research on the tarsier, and ecotourism. It collects and catalogues research materials on the species from institutions in the country and abroad, and produces educational and promotional materials.

The organization pursues reforestation projects and manages a visitor center at its Tarsier Research and Development Center. It runs a membership campaign in Bohol to build local support for tarsier conservation, aiming eventually to extend the campaign nationally and abroad. It hopes to link with other nature conservancy groups in the Philippines to jointly protect rare species and habitats.
