Pembina Institute

Description

The Pembina Institute is a Canadian think tank and registered charity focused on energy policy.

It produces research, analysis and policy solutions to support a transition to clean energy while backing communities, the economy and climate goals. It works with governments, communities, Indigenous leaders, businesses and other non-governmental organizations across Canada. Staff cover topics such as electricity, buildings, transportation, oil and gas, carbon removal and industrial decarbonization.

The institute grew out of a group of rural Albertans who organized after a 1982 sour gas well blowout near Drayton Valley, Alberta, exposed weak regulation of the energy sector. They pushed for tougher drilling regulations and formed the Pembina Institute in 1984. It has offices in Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver.

Over the decades its focus shifted from early work on emissions and environmental policy toward broader energy and sustainability issues, including scrutiny of oilsands development, renewable energy, transportation and building efficiency. It advocates restricting energy development to limits supported by science, promotes renewable energy sources, and calls for stronger climate action from governments.
