Pacific Environment

Description

Pacific Environment is an environmental organization that confronts urgent environmental issues by connecting local and global movements and catalyzing policy change.

It works with communities, coalitions, agencies, ports and businesses across the Pacific Rim and the Arctic, including sites in the United States, China, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Its programs address climate policy, plastic pollution, ocean and marine wildlife protection, and Arctic ecosystems. It works from local city councils up to international negotiations, supporting local leaders with knowledge and resources to influence decisions.

Methods include building power with grassroots partners, evidence-based advocacy grounded in science and Indigenous and local knowledge, coalition building, campaigns and communications, and pressing industries and governments toward sustainable practices and stronger policy. It has taken part in United Nations climate talks, International Maritime Organization discussions and negotiations toward a global plastics agreement.

The organization was founded in 1980, originally as the Golden Gate Energy Center, and took the name Pacific Environment in 1993. It is based in San Francisco, California. Early work focused on protecting old-growth forests and communities in Russia, Asia and the Arctic, and it later expanded its focus across the wider Pacific Rim.
