New Dream
Description
New Dream is a non-profit that helps people, communities and organizations change how they consume so both people and the planet do better.
It envisions a society driven by relationships, service to others, time in nature, community building and personal growth rather than by material accumulation. It supports basic economic security for all and helps individuals and communities pursue lifestyle change and community action. It provides solutions-oriented tools, resources and inspiration meant to shift social norms toward reduced consumption.
Founded in 1997 as the Center for a New American Dream, it sparked a national conversation on materialism and the hidden costs of high consumption, and ran campaigns on topics such as green purchasing, children and advertising, and carbon-reduction pledges. It renamed itself New Dream in 2017 after a restructuring, and its programs have included the SoKind alternative gift registry, Kids & Commercialism, and Simplify the Holidays. According to Wikipedia, the organization closed as an independent nonprofit in September 2020 but continues to collaborate with community partners as a Joint Plan of Work Partner of Virginia Organizing.
