Himalayan Wildlife Foundation

Description

The Himalayan Wildlife Foundation is a nonprofit organization in Pakistan that works to conserve nature and cultural heritage.

It believes that protecting and managing natural and cultural resources improves the quality of life for present and future generations. It works by transforming local economies, behaviours and attitudes so that communities and their environment can coexist. It helps local communities take ownership of their natural resources and heritage, and builds their skills to understand and manage their environment. Lessons learned are shared within and outside Pakistan to support better policies for managing natural and cultural resources in developing countries.

The foundation, previously called the Himalayan Wildlife Project, is based in Islamabad. It is widely credited with saving the Himalayan brown bear from extinction in Pakistan through research and conservation work in Deosai, which it helped get declared a national park. It has also worked on the Rohtas Fort Conservation Programme and on community-based conservation in Gumot National Park, Musk Deer National Park and Neelum Valley in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

It provides high-quality support to government through strategic intervention in natural resource management and on the ground support.
