Nature Conservancy of Canada

Description

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is a private, non-profit land conservation organization based in Canada.

It partners with individuals, corporations, foundations, Indigenous communities, other non-profit organizations and governments at all levels to protect natural areas that sustain the country’s plants and wildlife. It secures properties through donation, purchase, conservation agreements and the relinquishment of other legal interests in land, then manages them for the long term. It works at a local level through offices in every province.

Since its founding in 1962, the organization and its partners have protected millions of hectares of land and water across Canada, including habitat for many of the country’s endangered species. Notable projects include the Darkwoods Conservation Area in British Columbia, the largest single private conservation project in Canadian history at the time, and the Boreal Wildlands site near Hearst, Ontario. It has also run programs with the federal government to match public investment with private donations for land conservation, and has partnered with Indigenous nations on conservation areas and educational initiatives.
