Earth Island Institute

Description

Earth Island Institute is a hub for grassroots campaigns that conserve, preserve and restore the ecosystems on which civilization depends.

It acts as an umbrella organization providing fiscal sponsorship and project support to a network of activists and social entrepreneurs, offering fiscal administration, program management and office space so new environmental initiatives can start without forming their own nonprofit. Since its founding it has sponsored more than 200 projects and currently serves as fiscal sponsor for more than 75, including the International Marine Mammal Project, Plastic Pollution Coalition and Project Coyote. Alumni projects that became independent nonprofits include International Rivers and Rainforest Action Network.

It also publishes the Earth Island Journal, an award-winning magazine combining investigative reporting with stories of environmental activism, and runs the New Leaders Initiative, which hosts the annual Brower Youth Awards for young environmental leaders. Earth Island Institute is the standard-bearer for dolphin-safe tuna labeling in the United States.

Earth Island Institute was founded in 1982 by environmentalist David Brower and is based in Berkeley, California.
