Fund for Wild Nature

Description

The Fund for Wild Nature is a grantmaking organization that invests in grassroots conservation efforts protecting biodiversity and wilderness.

It provides modest grants to grassroots groups with small annual budgets, funding project expenses rather than general overhead. It supports campaigns in the United States, Canada and Mexico that conserve and restore native species and wild ecosystems, and it targets issues that mainstream funders overlook. Early grantees it helped launch include the Rainforest Action Network and the Center for Biological Diversity, and it continues to support smaller local groups such as the Blue Mountains Biodiversity Project and Los Padres Forest Watch.

It is run by an all-volunteer board that reviews grant requests and raises funds through appeals and an annual report. It has no endowment, so its grantmaking depends on ongoing donations. It is a tax-exempt charitable organization founded in 1982 by members of the Earth First! movement, originally as the Earth First! Foundation.
