Environmental Organizations United States

Description

The National Parks Conservation Association is a nonpartisan nonprofit that advocates for the protection of the United States National Park System.

Founded in 1919 as the National Parks Association, it began as a citizen watchdog for the newly created National Park Service and later took its current name in 2002. With more than 1.9 million members and supporters, it describes itself as the leading voice for America’s national parks, working to protect them on the ground, in the courtroom and in Congress.

From its headquarters in Washington, D.C., and 27 regional offices around the country, the organization employs program and policy experts, lobbyists, community organizers and communications specialists. It educates decision-makers and the public on issues facing the parks, including air and water quality, climate change, energy development, park funding and wildlife, and it has pursued litigation such as its challenge over the delisting of Yellowstone grizzly bears. It publishes a quarterly magazine, National Parks, for its members.
