Description

Marine Stewardship Council is an international non-governmental organisation that works to preserve wild ocean life through sustainable fishing.

It runs a certification programme and a blue ecolabel that recognise and reward fisheries that fish responsibly and sustainably. It works with fishermen, processors, retailers, producers and restaurants to encourage responsible use of marine resources and to build a sustainable seafood market. It sets a standard that fisheries are assessed against by independent, accredited conformity assessment bodies, and it welcomes input from environmental groups and other stakeholders during certification and standard reviews.

It was founded in 1996. Its headquarters are in London, with regional and local offices including one in Berlin covering the German, Austrian and Swiss market. It relies on funding from donors who share its mission and vision.
