Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund

Description

The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund is an endowment that funds species conservation projects around the world.

It gives grants to conservationists working to protect threatened and endangered animal, plant and fungus species, with no restriction on country or species type. Applications are reviewed three times a year by an independent board of advisers, with grants of up to 25,000 US dollars available for direct, on-the-ground conservation work. The Fund says it favours species that are threatened but do not normally attract conservation attention.

The Fund was established in 2008 by the current President of the United Arab Emirates, with an initial endowment of 25 million US dollars, and became active in 2009. It is based in Abu Dhabi. Since its founding it has supported thousands of projects across more than 170 countries, and its recipients have helped rediscover long-unseen species and describe species new to science.
