Transparency and Anti-Corruption Organizations Germany

Description

Mehr Demokratie e.V. is a registered association based in Berlin, at the Haus der Demokratie und Menschenrechte. It campaigns for the expansion of direct democratic participation rights in Germany. It addresses citizens, its own members, politics and public administration.

Its areas of work include citizens’ assemblies, local citizens’ initiatives, state-level referendums, and a nationwide referendum. It also works on electoral law, freedom of information, democratic culture, and European and international affairs. Other areas are inequality and democracy, climate and democracy, legislative reform, trade agreements, and the effects of the Corona pandemic on democracy. This work is carried out through campaigns, projects, events and public outreach, supported by regional branches (Landesverbände) across the German states.

The association is structured around a general members’ assembly and an executive board. The board coordinates ongoing work and bears overall responsibility. A board of trustees, drawn from science, arts, business and politics, advises the board and represents the association’s goals externally. Working groups let members and interested people develop proposals.

The organization publishes its own magazine, demokratie!, and other publications such as the essay Souverän. Its work is funded partly through membership fees and donations, and people can join as members.
