Description

The Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland e.V. is a non-profit registered association based in Berlin. It was founded in 2011. It works to strengthen civil society, democracy and participation in the digital age. It serves activists, educational initiatives, public administrations and the wider public.

It develops digital tools, organizes educational programs, maintains communities, initiates campaigns and brings its expertise into political processes. Its projects promote transparency, openness and technological sovereignty. The organization is led by a volunteer board and a paid staff team. It works in alliances with volunteers, activists, educational initiatives and administrations.

It is connected to like-minded organizations, including through the international Open Knowledge Network. It publishes a series on internal activism, sharing experiences and tools from building an organization that lives its values internally.

Its work is funded mainly through changing project-based grants from various funders, supplemented by donations and smaller amounts of commercial income. Since 2017 its annual reports have followed the Social Reporting Standard, and since 2018 its financial statements have been externally audited. The organization is certified by NGOsource under the Equivalency Determination. It is a member of the Initiative Transparente Zivilgesellschaft (Transparent Civil Society Initiative), run by Transparency International Deutschland.
