Kenya Human Rights Commission

Description

The Kenya Human Rights Commission, known as KHRC, is a non-governmental organization in Kenya that works to promote human rights-centred governance.

It was founded in 1992 by Kenyans exiled in the United States and later registered in Kenya in 1994. Its vision is a democratic state and society where freedoms and dignity are upheld, and its mission is to work with people so they can claim their rights and hold power to account.

KHRC combines activist research, civic organizing and movement building, political education, public interest litigation, strategic alliances and rapid response to rights violations. It monitors, documents and publicizes human rights abuses, and uses this evidence to support advocacy, community mobilization and legal action. Its current programmes cover political accountability in state institutions, economic and social justice, corporate accountability in selected sectors, and institutional resilience.

Over the years it has worked on both civil and political rights and on economic, social and cultural rights, helped strengthen Kenyan civil society and supported the country’s constitution-making process. It is a member of the International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and partners with other research and human rights organizations.
