Description

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 10 million people committed to a future in which everyone enjoys the human rights set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Its mission is to carry out research and action aimed at preventing and ending grave human rights abuses. The organization is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion, and is funded by its members and individual supporters rather than institutions.

Work is led mainly by an International Secretariat, which conducts most of the organization’s research and campaigning and manages supporters in countries without a national Amnesty entity. Where national offices exist, they handle their own members. The current strategic framework, covering 2022 to 2030, sets two global priorities, freedom of expression and civic space, and equality and non-discrimination, which together receive 80 percent of resources, with the remaining 20 percent allocated to flexible areas such as ending the death penalty and criminal justice reform.

Amnesty International is a democratic organization governed by its membership. Representatives from more than 60 countries attend an annual Global Assembly that elects the International Board and sets movement-wide decisions. Members without a national office can join as international members.

The International Secretariat maintains offices across the Americas, East Africa, Southern Africa, West and Central Africa, East and South East Asia and the Pacific, the Middle East and North Africa, and the United Kingdom, where it is headquartered in London. Amnesty International Charity, a subsidiary of Amnesty International Limited, is registered as a charity and a company limited by guarantee in England and Wales.
