International Rivers

Description

International Rivers is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that protects rivers and defends the rights of communities that depend on them.

It works with river-dependent and dam-affected communities, helping build networks of civil society groups so their voices are heard. It undertakes independent, investigative research to generate data and evidence for policies and campaigns. It campaigns against destructive dam projects and promotes alternative solutions for water and energy needs that respect human rights and environmental sustainability.

Founded in 1985, the organization is headquartered in Oakland, California, with regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Staff also work from South Africa, Thailand, Brazil, China and India. Its campaigns span Africa, China, Latin America, South Asia and Southeast Asia.

International Rivers contributed to the formation of the World Commission on Dams, which studied over a thousand dams worldwide. It publishes a journal, World Rivers Review, and an annual report covering dam-related issues.
