Environmental Organizations United States

Description

Hudson River Sloop Clearwater is a member-supported non-profit that protects the Hudson River through education, advocacy, sailing and music.

It runs the sloop Clearwater, a replica of a historic Hudson River sailing vessel, offering sailing classroom programs, onshore education and youth empowerment programs to schools and the public along the river. It builds an intergenerational community of river advocates and pushes for accountability from polluters and stronger environmental laws. Its advocacy has covered the Clean Water Act, industrial dumping, the Indian Point nuclear plant and the Storm King power plant fight.

Folk singer Pete Seeger and his wife Toshi Seeger founded the organization in 1966 to build a boat to save the river, and the sloop was launched in 1969. It is based in Beacon, New York, having moved there from Poughkeepsie in 2009. For decades it also ran the Great Hudson River Revival, one of the country’s oldest environmental and music festivals.
